After lurking a lot and contributing some months, i felt that the subscribe link (top right corner) just went on my nuts. So much help received so little contributed. And then every time i hit WebmasterWorld, i saw this little subribe plea box. Keeping such a unique place up and running is worth the investment. More than worth. Not to get the back stage secrets but just to give something - to help keeping this place alive.
I remember the short "discussion" with my woman:
- just want to let you know, i gonna pay a subscription fee to WebmasterWorld now.
- How much and why?
- Don't know how much. But it's a cool place. Learned at lot there.
- Ah, that's ok, darling.
And a year subscription is less than my monthly tobacco budget. ;)
What is your reason? Or are you sill searching for a reason?
Because "free" really means someone else is paying for it and it's not my nature to be a freeloader. So, helping to pay my way justifies paying a few bucks.
Because, even when people are firing off their slings and arrows regarding "who shot John" (Is it spam? Is is bad? Etc.) the WW forum manages to maintain decorum. Even little outbursts of flaming are quickly extinguished. Disagreements are present but are handled with intelligence, diplomacy, .....and subtle, creative name calling. That's worth a few bucks.
Because there are people who are obviously at the head of the class in SEO/SEM and ECom, and even if they won't share trade secrets, at least most of the time there's someone who will keep you from steering your car - or website - off of a cliff. That's worth a few bucks.
Because of the wit and sense of humor, humanity and perspective that tends to be associated with intelligent, successful, experienced souls, such as many of those who are paid up members....(with the exception of ********** and %%%%%%%%, and ######## of course)
That's worth a few bucks.
Now, if I could only get "them" to tell me the real low down and dirty secrets.....Got to employ greater cunning. Maybe employ spies.......
Thanks and Welcome to WebmasterWorld [webmasterworld.com], v7m.
btw, did i say wife? Doh, don't tell her ...
To pay what is rightfully owed. There are no ads here. The revenue come from our contribution.
The term 'rightfully' confuses me a little here. If you feel WebmasterWorld is worth a financial contribution, then I agree it's rightful, but it's not for everyone. You seem to be implying that we should all be members so we pay what we 'owe'.
If everyone is meant to owe something, there should be an entry fee. Otherwise, public access is perfectly legitimate (as it is now). I would also argue that 95%+ of the best content here is supplied by people who don't see a penny of that money. That is.. us, the community, who throw a lot of non-monetary value into the site.
Sure, the financial demands of WebmasterWorld should be able to be met with contributions and subscriptions, because this isn't meant to be Brett's hobby. But I believe financial contributions should be each visitor's personal choice, and not stem from a feeling that we 'owe' something beyond what we already provide. :)
