Is [quote] [/quote] out and > in?

I'm going to drill this thread down here so as not to confuse people with contradictory information.

This style of quote with the email/usenet greater than symbol is best used:

> to briefly quote someone IN THIS THREAD

While [ quote ]

is best used for off site sources.

Either way - keep both - very very brief.
