WebmasterWorld new member "weed" routine

VividViews

I just signed up as a member for these forums and noted this in the welcome email:

We run a new member file "weed" routine every 30 days. Members not posting within 30 days of sign up are removed from the member list.

I just want to say I don't like the idea. What's so wrong with registering to lurk the forums and watch certain threads?

If everybody lurked there wouldn't be a forum would there?

A forum is built on users integrating themselfs and their knowledge.

"You can just take, you have to give too"

Even for complete newbies in any given field the best way to learn is to participate.
So, welcome onboard, jump right in!

You don't actually need to register to do that.

Looks like you took care of business with that post, VividViews... back to lurking, now. ;)

Welcome to WebmasterWorld! I think trying to help others is part of the ethos here. Many new members find that initially they are mostly reading, but fairly soon are comfortable responding to newbie questions or posts in a field they know something about. Although search engine topics clearly dominate, there are lots of questions about other technical topics as well as non-technical topics like copy writing, legal issues, marketing, management... and that's not counting Foo (everything from chicken heads to stinky feet!)

VividViews has a good point. If all new members just spent some time here reading the board wouldn't get muddled up with "what is pagerank" type of posts.

Another good reason for the 30 day weed-out is to have a fresh & accurate member count.

Absolutely! It shouldnt be underestimated how much more you will get out of it by participating than just lurking...

The original poster has a point.

It seems that not all threads are visible in
the index unless logged in. This creates a
situation where someone is going to have to
post just to get access to the indexes.

Participation is not always a good thing,
especially if it's just a "me too" post.
Whether or not it's to make a quota.

There is nothing wrong with it! And there is plenty to be learned from it but consider...

Others have suggested advantages to participation over lurking. Although this may not have anything to do with your preference to lurk, many people seem to be somewhat impressed by our discussions and feel "intimidated" about participating. If some of that is true for you, while lurking, pay attention to how newbies and beginner questions are treated here. Our policies are a little different than many boards in this regard... I think you may be pleasantly surprised.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld! :)

Hey Vivid....

Didn't you just qualify?

He (she? Sorry, I didn't notice) hasn't responded, so I don't think bumping up his post count is that important to him. :D
Well... he's qualified, at least. Perhaps he'll respond in another 30 days.
;)

On lurking: I was never patient enough to lurk. Sure, I started out thinking I wouldn't post much, but I soon realized I couldn't shut up. Hmmm... I guess not everyone's so chatty as me. That's their perogative (sp?), and it's most definitely just as well!

I agree with the weed-out, though-- otherwise it'd be impossible to keep a reasonable and current member count. And, worst comes to worst, how hard is it to re-register? If you've got no post count to preserve...

Active involved community members make for active involved communities that work for everyone.

WebmasterWorld has many places to participate from the advanced tech issues, search engine issues, to the simple weekend fun of the good old MacGuru Gizmo Quiz in Foo.

Unfortunately, this is obviously an effort to thwart those ripping info from WW. I can't blame WW, but it gets in the way when I try to send a link from WW to friends (potential new members) & they get a login screen.

I too discovered this phenomena when I manually walked one friend to the Goggle News Forum & the thread isn't there w/o login, thereby additionally resulting in a completely different thread rank. There are some kinks to be worked out as I also sometimes get the login/subscribe page on a WW search result link. I'm fine with that though; I'd rather jump through hoops than see the hard work here stolen. Just looking forward to some better technology. :)

Brett, what about a redirect to Recent Posts [webmasterworld.com] instead of login/subscribe, much $exier.

I don't care for that situation either skip factor - thanks for the support. Yes, the page jacking is quite bad at the moment and forcing login (hence, agreeing to the tos) is the only thing we have.
