Regarding your own site url's for comments and idea's from other members, whether out here or in supporters, i would strongly suggest skating around the industry, then approaching interested parties via sticky is probably a more suitable way off doing it.
Still trying to get it a little better before I show it off there.

It is the back content that is also of issue and we do want the initial buyin to be higher than a simple month to month. There are other reasons for doing it this way and I think it works well.
>keep it that way for security reasons
Actually, I do it because I want to do it that way. I get to chat with everyone that subscribes and get feedback for the site. It is a nice, touch-base email and see if everything is a-ok with the site and the member satisifaction level. I am a strong believer in customer service and I believe you can do more to build your site via email than all the search engines on the planet ;-)
I like knowing that when someone signs up and introduces themselves, they'll be around for a while. I also like knowing that the money is spent in appreciation of Webmasterworld versus the thought of getting top secret info. Because really, I haven't found out anything top secret...yet. Don't join if that's what you're expecting back there. Join because you think to yourself, "Wow, all these webmasters in one place and I've learned SO much. I need to find a way to thank the Admins & Mods."
This forum looks like a homespun forum with nowhere near enough features. It often takes a whole day to catch up on the threads here. The most frustrating thing is wading through the 95% of posts which are from ill-informed wannabe webmasters or webmasters who merely add their worthless 2 cents worth "to feel part of the community" or express their petty frustrations. From time to time I get some really meaningful information here but the search and filtering facilities here are way too primitive to justify the time lost and the amount required to join at this stage. This interface is just not "cute" anymore.
Improve them and I'll pay five times the existing registration fee.

This system is so very advanced, i don't think there is anything on the net or within any fortune 500 companies intranets that even come close to its capabilities. And the higher you look down from the more you see.
Have a very good look around.
Even so, as much as I personally have wished there were a monthly subscription, I do think the 6mth/12mth fee is better for the long term health of the forum.
And even though our dollar typically runs about $2 to the USD on exchange rate, but about 1 to 1 on a Big Mac index, which means I'm looking at close to double the price to join... I have nearly got it saved now (took a few months) and will gladly pay up at the present rate.
If the price were pitched higher, however, I just plain couldn't.
I mean a private forum setup like this. There is only one out there that I know of.
>homespun
Right it is. Usability on the front end is job one.
>nowhere near enough features
There is not a major available in any other forum system that this forum doesn't have available. That's just for openers. I'd list all the things it has on the back end that other forums don't have, but thats for another time.
>some really meaningful information
Sure, like info no where else found on the internet:

Completely customizable on a per-member basis (edit your skin, and insert anything you feel like - your a webmaster...)
>search features
It's the only forum on the net intended to be indexable by all major search engines out of the box. eg: don't like the site search engine? Then us alltheweb or google.

No need to get all defensive about your technology. It's a little bit sad that you aren't instead actively focusing on ways to improve the value and experience for webmasters... and for yourself.
....oh and that you accuse a webmaster who has nothing to gain by offering a different perspective on improvements to your forum, as well as almost $1000 per year in fees if more useful features were added, of "trolling".
How much money has this forum brought in for you since launching it Brett?
At first, I thought, "No, no, money has nothing to do with the quality of the user", but that's really not true. When people become successful in their profession, it's not usually based on luck. Yes, when I paid my subscription, I expected to see more experienced people vs newbies in the supporters forum. It makes sense that experienced people make more money; therefore, those people can afford to pay the subcription. There's where money often equals quality. Oh, and not the quality of the individual, the quality of the individual's knowledge.
If someone gave me a choice of seminars; one, run by a self-made billionaire; or another, run by a gas station attendant...I would go to the one run by the billionaire. I figure the billionaire must've learned something important along the way to success.
Anyway, about 100 more words than I needed.
