Editing Posted Messages

I thought (perhaps my memory fails me) that I used to be able to go back and edit a previous post (in the case today, I wanted to add an extra bit of relevant data that I later remembered). But the option didn't appear. Is it gone?

(ok, now I'm really confused - this message has the edit option, but the other one (thread "How can you have 30,000 pages on your site" under Google News, msg 14) doesn't!)

The edit button times out. Don't know how much time has to elapse before it disappears (I have a short internet attention span).

The edit link goes away after a certain amount of time, and it's not that long.
