Is there a reason why many people who post in webmasterworld don't put their web site details in their profile?

Never mind andreasfriedrich. BTW, you need at least some number of posts or user level (Full Member?) for the Homepage to be shown in your profile.

Is there a reason why many people who post in webmasterworld don't put their web site details in their profile?

Like some others, I had mine in the profile until I realized two things:

  • Wierd things were beginning to happen in my log files.

  • I came to the understanding that all manner of webmaster frequent (lurk/post) this establishment ....and I do mean all. The Good, Bad and the Ugly. Problem is, you just don't know exactly who they are.

If I could have it to do all over again, I never would have put my url in there.

    Pendanticist is right.

I removed my site and company email for the same reasons... strange and unwanted solicitations. (The Hawk Lurkers are always out patroling for undefended and easy prey.)

What exactly are you saying... some details would help others better understand what the issues are that concern you.

austtr, suffice to say I don't wish to divulge exactly what I know and/or of whom I know it of - as this would be a bit of a tip-off.

I'll give you one forinstance though: Each time I post that I've shut down a rouge machine or a malconfigured proxy server, the formmail queries that night will spike enormously and then abruptly die within a few hours. Each time. This correlational effect tells me these attacks occur far to frequently to be happenstance.

At the moment some of them think they're pretty clever spoofing their IP Numbers and such, but I'm working on tracing them as a prelude to shutting down their Internet service.

In addition to that - each time I report them, I also tag on the upstream provider, the uce'at'ftc.gov along with whatever SpamCop gives me as the ISP's abuse addies and for good measure I tag on ipadmin, hostmaster, support and for good measure (if I'm especially irked) billing.

As a former Marine and Vietnam Veteran (I spent a year in country), I can play this cat and mouse game forrrrrrrrrever.

Eventually I'll nab them as it's only a matter of time.

    Pendanticist.

I will only say this, a strongly worded post (or two) regarding spam mail and pop-ups has spurned the wrath of some very cunning people. Unlike pendanticist I do not have the technical expertise to take these folks head-on so I use different strategies. By not posting home pages and email addresses I just make my life a bit easier.

    I get 1000's of spam-mail a day - and love it.

I don't advertise, I don't even have a website, but my last 8 (long-term) clients came from my profile & posts.

I'll take spam any day -- since with all the junk there is a good livelihood in there to.
