Forum Moderators: open
Thanks! This is an oft-repeated question in the Moderators Forum, too. We can't quite put our finger on it, either, but someone early-on said the forums had *sparkle* so that's how we still continue to refer to whatever this elusive attribute is.
I can tell you that we moderators protect it fiercely. If someone or some thread (extremely rare, btw) seems to be detrimental, the red dots in the Moderators forum light up like a Christmas tree.
To me the "sparkle" is due, at least in part, to the civillity and respect shown by everyone to everyone here, first thing I noticed.
Mike - I've enjoyed reading you for a long time at SEF. Drop by often and help us "sparkle"!
Sorry, just had to shout that one.
I find them civil, repectful, informative, flame-free, and so on. But I think the answer is also right here in FOO, our relief valve. SEO is such a brain-fatiguing susbject we need FOO. I mean, where else would you find serious folk talking about foods that make you Puke??? Huh???
Keep up the good work folks.

This, combined with the willingness to help others and to be a part of a community, is one of the aspects that makes this forum special. That's one of WmW's qualities...it's a community. These days, with the internet and advanced technology, there has been a loss of human "connectedness"...so people are missing the sense of "community" that once existed, pre-computers, TV, nintendo, cell-phones, etc.
Something I've been wondering about though...what accounts for the high level of intelligence and education of this group of people? Just a thought.
In any case...this is a great community! Thanks to you all for making it and keeping it this way!
All kidding aside, you are right. If I had to pick a term that defined this group, it would be 'experience.' And you don't gain experience in this business without first having figured out a way to survive in it. Lessons learned the hard way would account for most of the education shown here.
Geez! The above sounds too much like ad copy, but I can't think of another way of explaining our common ground, or why we've happened to congregate here.
We plan a nationally syndicated column soon. There's also a weekly TV show in production -currently scheduled to air right after Crocodile Hunter. It'll be hosted by Dan Rather.
I have a particular personal reason for liking this forum. For two years, at my first online community, and where I did my first homepage ever, I've had the embarrassment of having the screen name of mamafoofoo, which started as a joke, and which stuck - even hosting boards and chats with it - kinda known as foo or foofoo for short.
It's almost a Zen kind of thing, accidentally and unknowingly becoming a fictitious online persona that represents being, technically, a nothing - a wild card, a whatever or a whatnot, and building an identity with it.
It's worn well, I've become "mama" to many, and somehow managed to maintain some degree of credibility and dignity, befitting my age, in spite of having "Little bunny foo foo, hopping through the forest, bopping all the field mice on the head" sung to me in chat on a regular basis.
It really is the personal touch here that makes the difference. There's a real sense of community (which can't be deliberately contrived, it's an outgrowth of the members themselves, in a conducive environment), in addition to the great information. Makes it feel like an actual "place."
(mamafoofoo's two cents) :)
( I've tried to resist for a long time Marcia, but the urge finally overwhelmed me ;) A belated, welcome to the forums! I always enjoy reading you.
(quick note: anyones email address as used on the board here that is parked on an autoresponder, gets the email address auto removed. There were a couple in this thread. The board has to treat the email as if it had bounced.)
5 days ago, I posted 2 questions here, and 2 at SEF. (all unrelated topics) I have gotten several helpful replies to both posts here, both SEF posts have already fallen down the page with no replies.
The sparkle is this - everyone's tone and willingness to help. Keep it up, gang! I hope to be as helpful as you guys in the future. :)
We moderators worry that we won't be able to keep clearing the bar if you keep raising it so.
Re SEF, they are a big board, and they are often the first place that many have found seeking SEO resources, that's a lot of what can very often be a different level of users relative to those that come here. It's so easy for a post to fall down with all the cries for help. We moderators worry about that all the time, too. So, if you see an orphan post, please let us know.
I have frequented other boards where someone gives information, that information has been wrong, someone points it out, and the entire thread is deleted.
On those boards, it seems that the main objective of them is to ensure that the forum's "experts" are seen as infallible. Here, it appears that there is honest exchange of opinion and information with little regard to WHO is right, but rather WHAT is right.
It is a pleasure to read these fora, and I daresay it is much easier to believe what is discussed here.
Welcome Laisha to a peaceful fora.
