I don't know how to ask without this becoming a twelve-headed thread of advertising, but... sigh...

...where's the best place to get RAM?

I've found a couple of dealers via a web search, but I need TRUSTED sources with a good track record.

I don't want to get scammed - so hopefully someone can help me with consideration to WebmasterWorld in the respect of not turning this into a spam thread.

Go to a local specialist retailer, rather than buying online. It might cost a bit more (although that's not always the case), but you've got a better guarantee.

I buy all my computer parts from one local company. The guy behind the desk has forgotten more about computer hardware than I'll ever know, and won't sell rubbish, only genuine, carefully-sourced parts.

If you've got to buy online, use Crucial (I have in the past with no problems).

Preferably tho', as encyclo says, go local (and preferably specialised, not big-chain). It's surprising how many issues can arise just from a simple RAM upgrade. You might pay a bit more, but you've got some fall-back and help if needed.

Judging by your nic tho' it sounds like you won't need it.

I agree with bcolflesh. Crucial is the "consumer" brand for Micron, if memory serves me. Back when I stayed up to date with this sort of thing, which I really don't now, Micron was one of the world's largest suppliers of RAM.

I've bought RAM from their web site once for my Dell Laptop. I had no problems and even received free shipping which ended up getting to my doorstep overnight.

And that's the problem with Crucial. I hate to break up the Crucial fan club ;) but their small print says that their responsibility ends when they give the goods to the courier. And their courier in our part of the world (UK) is rubbish. So, after much trouble with Crucial over several purchases, we went elsewhere.

crucial, no question, that's a great company, I never buy anywhere else. Sorry to hear that the courier service in the UK isn't any good, fortunately for those of us who live in the US that's not an issue, shipped same day, 2 days later arrives, free shipping over x dollars. I've used these guys a lot, had a video card fail recently, didn't have the receipt or shipping tags, no questions asked return, shipped new one to replace the old one then we shipped the old one back, no down time, no cost, no headache. That's what I judge these online companies by. Plus a lifetime guarantee, that's nice.

Quality RAM, they make it easy to find the right RAM your system, prices are competitive. I've used them three times, been very happy. (I'm in the States, btw)

Yes, their RAM is quality RAM, but it's by no means the best. Corsair is miles ahead in the quality stakes as is also evident from the range they do. Corsair build a lot of low latency modules, specialist modules, and are always ahead in launching new RAM (like DDR2 and DDR2 ECC). While you can't go wrong with Crucial quality ...if you want the best you'll be looking at Corsair/OCZ type of RAM. It's often at the same price as Crucial.

Yes, Corsair is good, generally recognized to be excellent, but 'best' needs to be qualified, the high end mobo's generally recommend brand x or y, which I used to think was just meaningless promotion of brand x or y, but I've come to realize it's not, they actually mean that their mobo will work best with brand x or brand y, I found this out when I ignored that advice and the memory didn't work, perfectly good memory.

You can make a short list of good memory, kingston/crucial/micron are very good, but crucial gets huge points for being very easy to deal with, their memory type locator features, their shipping time. Samsung/Corsair also produces good high end memory, after that the list is pretty short.

If you are going super high end, or setting up serious production servers perfect memory becomes more of an issue, but then it's not a question of brand x or y, it's a question of using the brand the mobo manufactorer recomends.
