I've set the directory for sharing but it doesn't help.
I've made sure the file itself does not have the read only attribute set.
Whether I use Word for a document or Excel for a spreadsheet I can open the file from computer B but cannot resave the changed file onto computer A. Maybe I could save it as a different document but that's not what I need. I need for both of us to be working on the same file (not simultaneously, I know) but this seems impossible with our current setup.
Actually, if I find resolution to this problem I then need to find a database program that we can use from both computers with the source file on computer A but first I think I need to resolve this very basic issue mentioned above. However, if you have a db workaround that we can both work on the same db I'm open to suggestions.
Thanks!

You got me to checking deeper and I was able to resolve the problem completely. For others who may have this problem I'll skip the confusing Microsoft resolution and simply tell you what I did.
Doubleclick on MyComputer. Right click on C drive. click on Sharing and Security. Check in box for Share this folder on the network and in the box for Allow network users to change my files.
I had given access to individual directories but when I gave access to the entire C drive (root) that made all of the difference.
It took the computer maybe 30 minutes of processing the changes and now everything works great.
If you do this, make sure you have a good... great firewall. Other than that I don't see a problem.
