ok, so its pretty much inaccessible.

no there is no backup.

my question is about hard disc recovery companies.

i know its a matter of the data on the drive, but are these companies worth it?

$500 us dollars for data recovery?

anyone have a good or bad experience?

Before you shell out for a recovery service, buy a USB box (they're incredibly cheap) install the drive in that and see what happens. You may get lucky.
