LCD Monitor Brightness

Manufacturers think brighter is better, my eyes don't!

For several years now i've had an Iiyama LCD monitor. It's been a pleasure to work with, as being older than today's "state of the art" it isn't anything like as bright as todays offerings, and looking at white was like looking at paper - hardly any glare or strain on my eyes at all. Sadly, it has packed up, so I need a new monitor. I'm looking at 19" widescreen.

What i've discovered, is that as far as manufacturers are concerned "brighter is better" when it comes to LCD, and I can't find anything that doesn't market itself on how "bright" it is! I don't want "bright", I want something that is easy going on my eyes that I can use all day without feeling like i'm staring into an arc lamp.

Yes, they all have "brightness" controls, but trying to adjust this in conjunction with contrast results in a washy appearance on every monitor i've tried. Is there any particular type of technology I should be looking at to find a monitor that is comfortable to use as a programmer - surely I can't be the only one to have discovered this?

The one I am currently using is a 19" ViewSonic LCD Monitor (actually two :) - one extended), and they seem to be fine with eyes.

Except when you said it now, they seem to be brighter than they were a minute ago ;)
