Hello,
Iam interested on setting a server for hosting 4-5 websites and i find this forum very helpful.
I was wondering if my broadband connection ADSL
download/upload speed 1Mbps/128kbps is sufficient for my hosting needs.

Very unlikely. Most domestic ISP accounts use dynamic IP addresses, prohibit hosting, and limit transfer amounts.

There are plenty of hosting companies plugged into real connections which can help you at a low price.

Hosting sites is probably against your ISP's TOS.

well my isp doesn't prohibit it and i get a static ip address, i can even have 4 for a small extra fee.

however bear in mind that what you will be servign is the upload speed, which is (always) significantly less than your download speed on adsl.

... so think about when you are visiting a site and if you are seeing it a t maximum speed for instance, say you hosted that site, it would take 8 times as long for a similiar user to download.

personally i have 512 upstream and wouldn't host a site however i have been know to host a test site briefly and it works fine, however i think you should bear in mind ...

know what you are doing, you may well be exposing all of your data on your computer if not set up right.

if they are grafics heavy forget it.

if they are early days without much traffic then why not.

however cheap hosting is available, for instance there are packages with multi site hosting, mysql php etc for around $5 a month
