Bandwith aside (because he can pay me for that) will my server be able to handle that kind of traffic.
It is a pentium 4 3.0ghz with only 512kb ram
I have no idea what kind of capacity that would have so any tips would be appreciated.
What kind of website? Static pages? PGP? CGI? CMS? If so, which? How many pages per visitor?
You'd continue to let them mooch, regardless of the amount of traffic and resources?
Figure that most activity is concentrated in 8 hours/day. In any case, it would be incorrect to spread out the visitors over 24 hours... This is 41 visitors/minute, .69/second. How many page views/visitor?
Web hosting is cheap. What's the point? Perhaps they want to do something unique that requires more control of the server. Tell them to get a VPS.
That said, I have done this myself. The only reason to do this is to encourage somebody who you think has some good ideas and potential. It has to be an altruistic act on your part.
And it helps if you think they aren't really likely to swamp your server, but will learn a lot in the process. ;)
The site is static html pages but reasonably heavy on graphics and a lot of reading. I would expect people to be spending 10-30 minutes on his site and probably taking no more than 10 pageviews in that time.
The visitors are likely to be American and European mostly so probably spread over more than an 8 hour period.
Just trying to get a rough idea of what a low spec server like mine can comfortably deal with. If it won't cope I'll tell him so and advise him in another direction.
