problems installing new DVD burner

I just bought a DVD burner and tried to install it on my computer. I need help with the installation. What I did was open up the computer and put the burner in the expansion slot. Then I plugged in the cables and turned on the computer with intention to install the drivers. At first I was only getting the set up screen with F1 and F10 buttons as choices. Then I tried unplugging the cables from the back of the DVD in order to get to Windows XP and that's when I started having problems. All it does now is make long continuous beeps with long continuous pauses in between. What does this mean and how can I fix it? Thanks so much for all the help.....

beeps mean hardware problems. Which likely means cable problems. Make sure you unplug both the ribbon cable AND the power cable from the DVD, then reboot. If that doesn't work, you've likely either unplugged or moved another cable, or zapped something.
