new monitor not working

driver problems

hey all

i just purchased a 23 inch apple HD flat screen monitor.
i own a pc, though i was told that there would be no problems

unfortunately, it wont work. when i boot up, it works fine until my desktop is about to appear, then it turns itself off

i called support, and i was able to use it when in safe mode. i tried to change the display settings to a higher resolution, but it still turns itself off

the support guy said i need to update my drivers..i have a nvidia geForce FX 5700 ultra video card, so the DVI slot is no problem

but i dont know which drivers to update with!
after looking at nvidia's site and googling, i think the one i need is the forceWare driver v 77.77

i'm afraid to uninstall my old drivers vefore being certain this updte is the one i need...

so i'm typing this on my 15 inch dell monitor while my nice monitor sits here blank AAAAAAAH

Looking at the specs of both your video card and the monitor/display I see the only supported resolution of the card that matches the display is 1920 x 1200 pixels. Your video card/adapter does not support the other resolutions of 1280 x 800 pixels or 1024 x 640 pixels (at least on the specs I'm looking at). Did you try deleting the monitors from device manager with your 15" hooked up. Then shut-down the computer and hook up the Apple display. Like I say, you'll have to run it at 1920 x 1200.
The video drivers are available via www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp under Graphics Driver>>GeFoForce and TNT2>> Operating System.

Uhm... after taking a look at nVidias site and their support Q&A the question was asked:
"Which NVIDIA based graphics card will support the Apple 23" or 20" Cinema Display?"

The Answer (excerpt):
GeForce 6 based cards can support both the Apple 20" & 23" Cinema Displays at their native recommended resolution. *

* Command line or DOS mode cannot be supported because the Apple EDID (Firmware) does not support these modes.

I'm not sure your 5700 will support it - it should by the specs, but who knows?

i just talked to support (again) and they said that the 5700 isnt on their list of compatable cards (even tho the poeple at the mac store said it was)

the support guy said that mac "officially" is supported by the quatro series (700, 1100, 3000, 4000, 3400 and 4400)

thing is, it works fine in safe mode at any resolution

i went into the device manager, and saw no errors.
i really dont want to buy a new vid card and waste $400...

i dl'd the drivers..

but in my settings on the 15 inch, the highest my res can go is 1600x1200...

do i still delete the monitor and plug in the apple and restart?

Jeremy, sounds like your refresh rate is set too high. I haven't seen this problem with LCDs but CRTs will shutdown if the refresh rate is set too high. For most LCDs, 60Hz is optimum.

I would install new drivers which should take care of the conflicting devices (maybe). Go to device manager after driver installation/reboot. Delete everything under "monitors" and then shut-down. Disconnect the 15-inch and hook up the new display and then start up normally.
If it doesn't work and it is indeed incompatible you can pickup a GeForce 6800 based video card for well under $200 and an Radeon X800 based card for around that also which are compatible with that display. I am running a Quadro FX700 based card in my workstation, but I would prefer an ATI based card (personal preference).

It's the wide-screen aspect ratio of the display that makes it incompatible with all but the latest cards.

I would rather put my $1500 for a display like that into a nice video card and two 19-inch LCD's. You would be much happier :)
