laser printers

I am trying to start a business and i need a laser printer, i will be doing a lot of printing with it, my question is what is a good printer for this? i have no idea what to look for when buying on. any help would be appreciate it...thank

First, Welcome to WebmasterWorld!

When it comes to laser printers, you have a pretty big range to choose from. Most will be okay, some will be great, and a few will be lemons.

To help you decide on a printer, useful information to know would be how much printing do you expect to do, on what type of paper, and what paper size? Will you be doing double-sided printing, or will you only print on one side of a piece of paper? Finally, do you need color printing, or is black and white okay?

There are not as many printers out there as there appears - many are made by the same manufacturers (Tektronix are Xerox and HP are made by Canon - same machines with different cases/boxes/manuals).

Also look at the price of the cartridges. Some have very cheap toners, some are very expensive. Be wary of the cheaper toner cartridges - they may need to complimented with a drum, more expensive cartridges may come complete with the drum.

Once you have found a few cartridges that you will be prepared to pay for, then try to find a machine to fit around them that you like. After all - the machine costs next to nothing compared to the cost of the cartridges, over time.

P.S. Avoid Dell printer - they are made by Lexmark but the cartridges use different chips. Buying Lexmark cartridges for the Dell printers will not work. And Dell cartridges are not cheap.

Another big consideration for selecting a printer is weather or not you intend to print a lot of color using a laser. If you don't think you'll be printing a lot of color I'd stay away from a color laser. Color lasers have a lot more parts and are much more expensive to service in the future. I'd recommend calling a local printer repair company and asking for suggestions from the guys in the trenches. When I did that the company hooked us up with a nice fast black laser printer for everyday use (actually sold it to us as reconditioned and included a 1 year service plan) and then recommended a color laser for our color applications. The toner for the straight black laser was much cheaper. ($45 per black toner cartridge compared to replacing the $110 black cartridge for the color printer) SO we used the cheap and yet high quality black laser for everyday printing and the color laser a few times a week for printing our presentation documents etc.

We have a couple of Samsung lazers, we refill the cartridges. They have a little bung on the side, pull it out, pour some more toner in and away you go.

Touch wood up to now we've had no problems. We worked out if we refill the cartridge 4 times it covers the cost of a new printer if something goes wrong!

thank you everyone for your help, to answer some of your questions, which might help me better, i will be using art bacground paper measuring 8" x 10" and 81/2" x 11". with be business i am trying to start, i cannot actually tell you how much i will be printing, except for that the business main thing is the printer. cause i have to print on these background, so all i know is that it will be alot of printing involved. i have no idea whats so ever about laser printers, i was told that it would be in my best interest to get one of these instead of a inkjet one. which i do tent to agree with that. but i am so blank when it come to this, i appreciate all the help you have given me and i will apreciate any further help i receive...thanks candy
