This is probably a stupid question but I wanted to know if I could use the (desktop I think) Pentium 4 2.8ghz processor in my HP Pavilion ze5500 laptop in a new desktop computer I'm building.

No you can't, they don't have the same voltage and socket. Tough luck:)
