Replacing my Desktop

Does anyone have any advice to offer on this?

I am about to replace my desktop. The one I am using is now more than three years old and beginning to creak a wee bit. My main problem is what processor to go for. What are the feelings on the AMD 64 series? Can anyone who has moved to these tell me if they offer a real speed advantage? For example what is the equivalent 32 bit clock speed for an AMD 64 running at 2.2 GHz?

My other problem is that I am swithering about the change to a TFT monitor. My main issue with this is that I have heard that they display certain colours quite differently. When building a website, If I chose a colour from a colour sample will it look significantly different on CRT monitors?

Any advice or anecdotes would be appreciated.

I don't know much about AMD so I'll abstain from commenting on that.

A design guy at my office had a PC running on a Mac TFT monitor. The color was VERY true, as that's what Macs do. :) If you want an LCD monitor, go with a nice Mac TFT and make sure you have a good video card.

Dude, i have the best solution for you for your monitor question. Since your going to upgrade anyway, get a nice video card, i have a ATi Radeon 9800 Pro, this takes 2 monitor ports or dual monitor support, hook up the TFT monitor on one port and the CTR on the other. Check out my setup:
LCD on the left and CRT on the right, both 19" monitors Sorry about the quality of the pics, i took them with my mobile.

So now you can check your colour corrections or have Photoshop on one monitor and notepad or dreamweaver on the other.

We've had some discussion [webmasterworld.com] about AMD vs Intel. I believe it's immaterial which one you choose. Windows isn't 64 bit. By the time there's a stable 64 bit Windows OS 64 bit would have moved on. Buy AMD for features other than 64 bit. Or Intel for features other than EM64T.

Processor speed is largely irrelevent for most people. Any modern CPU is likely to be good enough. I prefer CRT but, if you get a good Sony or Iiyama LCD then you'll probably be OK. Compare LCD colour with CRT at your local PC shop.
