Hi,

I'm probably going to be registering a new business for VAT early on.

There should be some trade to EU and worldwide. I will be getting professional advice and checking with Government, etc - but I thought it was best to get a consensus view first, as I so often receive conflicting information, and usually receive it from the officials who are meant to know.

ok - UK company
selling a physical product.

so...I would think (based on customer address)

Selling to
UK (VAT Added)
EU (Customer responsible for VAT in own country)
outside EU - not VAT liable.

Your feedback is appreciated.

Many thanks

I'm not a VAT professional, but this is what our company does (also UK based):

UK: UK VAT added
EU: UK VAT added
Rest of World: No VAT.

As I understand the regulations with regard to the EU you simply charge local VAT. So a person from France buying in Britain pays British VAT, and a person from Britain buying in France pays French VAT.

I do know that the seller is responsible for collecting the correct VAT.

As you say you will, you do need to get professional advice. VAT is rather complicated and the rates vary depending on precisely what is being sold.

if you get a EU vat number for EU coutries (outside UK) then you don't need to charge vat.

The seller is responsible for collecting VAT unless the buyer is in another EU country and has provided a valid EU vat number.
