So - Telefonica (Spains national telecomunications company, owner of Terra Lycos) has been blacklisted for not being able to cope with spam.
Ridiculous - About 80% of all personal traffic in the country goes through these guys!

Already getting clients complaining - why do they seem to think that their Telefonica ADSL and emails have anything to do with me? :(

Anybody else having trouble with this?

Spam filtering is out of control. One of the hosts/ISPs I work with just put AOL on their spam list. My clients were naturally very unhappy as their customers who used AOL e-mail couldn't communicate. We got that fixed, but I think this situation is going to get worse before it gets better.

Encourage people to contact their e-mail provider and/or the blocking firm - enough noise, and stuff can happen.

Don't feel too bad for Telefonica - they did this to themselves - once they get a professional abuse mechanism in place, they'll be back in business:

Some ISPs blacklisted them because they had clients who were receiving over 1000 spams a day from Telefonica, and never once received a legit email from them.

Some b2b companies have filtered out Yahoo and Hotmail as they figure that if the company is legit, they'll use their own domain for emails and not some free provider.

Others are moving only to formmail. To reply to an email, you have to visit the website and fill out another form. I hate this idea, just doesn't make it convenient to keep a record of what you sent to someone.

They might lose some business due to the above methods, but again, they might come out ahead as it'll be less man hours filtering through the free hosting garbage.

Trouble with this ban is that Telefonica isn't a dedicated ISP like AOL. It owns and maintains the main infrastructure in the country, so there's a number of resellers who use their dynamic IPs, companies who directly plug into the backbone, etc.

I'm sure that there are a lot of ways that they can tidy up their act, but I don't think an all out spam ban is the answer!

Don't make a big deal out of this.

RBL lists are run by many different organisations or individuals, almost all volunteers. Have a look at

www.openrbl.org

Some RBLs are run wisely, while others are more "agressive", adding IPs without much consideration. It could be that some are run by paranoids (I can't really condemn them, since I have old addresses that receive over 3000 spam mails/day)

In the end, the ISPs and sysadmins decide WHICH RBLs to use.

No admin is "forced" to use spam lists. Each company makes their own decicions. We do not use IP blocks, we sue content matching (though obfuscation may make it obsolete in the end).

SPAM is a huge problem, I am glad this is happening to TDE, however, I am sad for you and how this affects your emailing :(

Good luck :)

woops, sorry I am a dislexia boy ;)

Use content matching, not sue (haha) :D

There's a better way to fight spam. Showed up in Linux Journal.

I tend to think that in general Terra lycos need to clean up their act ....from some contacts I have in law enforcement they have a large problem with illegal material staying for long time periods on their networks ......

Where does your spam come from ...?

at least half of what I get comes out of yahoo accounts ....
