As Clovis-19 spreads and disrupts I believe many/most have seen traffic and conversion drops. Most niches, including mine, are not even indirectly applicable to the virus or the efforts/means of fighting or living through it. That does not mean that one should not look into how to assist both new and return visitors.

Each vertical, each niche, each site is different so don’t take the following examples from what I’ve done as a list or a connect the dots but as, perhaps, inspiration for your visitors to your site in your niche in your vertical.

First thing I did:
Back when I ran AdSense I placed an ad block below the page summary (my page content follows the inverted pyramid model) as a natural division point. A month or so ago I reinserted a bordered ‘ad’ block with call to action and link to a (on-site) Covid-19 info landing page that I’ve been keeping up to date.
Note: yes, that landing page is open to SE indexing.

Nothing inflammatory, just the basics of known solid info and known individual best practices. High quality content including imagery with lots of personally collated cited further reading links.

Second thing I did:
Part of my site targets children; or perhaps more accurately targets their parents and grandparents with cool family friendly child interesting content. Very popular SM shares.

One part of that is a colouring section, the topic being my niche specific but not in a product placement way; eg: if I was a cake site it would have various cakes and the mixing baking process as subjects. Plus the ability to add custom text to the bottom such as ‘Brett helps Mom by mixing the eggs and flour’. One can make custom colouring books, etc.

The past few weeks I’ve been adding child level virus/pandemic colouring pages. How to wash hands. What a coronavirus looks like. What social/physical distancing is, why do it, how to know how far, doing school work at home, etc. Each with explanatory story text.

Third thing I did:
This past week I’ve added a child level basic info content page; the adult page rewritten with more child intriguing imagery.

In both there is niche topical inclusion but lightly naturally as a story aide not a sales pitch.
Note: children’s content pages are closed to SE indexing; your business model requirements may differ.

The SM results have been increasingly positive, WoM shares are keeping traffic up even as SE traffic has been more down than up.

May the force (of inspiration) be with you.

I try to do the opposite, provide my sites as an escape for those who want something else than the continuous stream of COVID-19 information. There is no virus information or an explanation of my company's strategy regarding the pandemic.

One of my sites which is hobby oriented has seen a visitor increase of more than 100% in the last week of people who seek distraction from the daily news cycle. If they need COVID information, with Google it's just one search away.

Based on referers, a few scattered students are still doing their assigned readings, and I’m happy to oblige.

The content that is driving the web right now is not what most of us do.

Until the panic and concentration on such authoritative sites as defined by big tech are no longer hogging the net the best you can do is provide for those users who actually DO come looking for "you" and, as lammert astutely observes, don't remind folks of what has them out of work, under lock and key ( so to speak) and tearing hair and hoarding toilet paper. :)

Keep your site YOUR site!
