Hello reader,

I am a little bit confused at the moment regarding canonical url for my website.

First, I had submitted my website links with HTTP protocol only. After a few months, I purchased SSL and submitted URL with HTTPS protocol. When I check google search console, I can see that HTTP and HTTPS both of these URLs are getting traffic. When I check index status of my HTTPS URL, I noticed that google selected HTTP based URL as my canonical URL for HTTPS-based URL.

Now, I am confused, as both URLs ( HTTP and HTTPS ) are getting traffic, so which one I should submit for google ranking HTTP or HTTPS ?

Thank you,

Hi jpskainth and welcome to the forums.

When you first submitted yout site in GSC it was HTTP so when you moved to HTTPS, Google still has the old HTTP site listed. They advise us to add the HTTPS version of the same site to GSC as if it were a "new" site.

To ensure that the new HTTPS Urls are indexed, ideally you would use your htaccess file to ensure that traffic to the old URLs is 301 redirected to the new HTTPS URLs.

Not knowing the environment specifics (is it hosted on an Apache server? Version #? Is it built on Wordpress?) means only generic suggestions for the "how to" so for some older discussions that might help, see [webmasterworld.com...] or another here: [webmasterworld.com...]
