A Police dept has requested the IP and email address of a user who posted on my site the threat to commit a violent crime.

Will my giving them the info violate any privacy laws?

Yikes: I wouldn't want people posting anything unlawful.

1. It depends upon your local jurisdiction. In your country/region, what are the laws pertaining to privacy?
2. It depends upon your site's terms of service. If you've said you don't share the info, you're likely to run into hot water an may have to reveal the info anyway.
3. You usually cannot resist the a lawful request (see 1 above).

It depends on the method of the request.

IANAL, but I watch them on TV. :) If Bob the cop asks for it, you are not required to provide it. if the local police station sends you a letter requesting the information, you are not required to provide it. If you are subpoena'd, well that's a different story (as Engine says, see 1 above).

Your ToS should probably state that you don't share the info with other parties, except when required to do so by law.

4. Ask to see the warrant.
A "lawful request" should be accompanied by a copy of the federal court warrant that justifies the request for otherwise private customer or client information.

welcome to WebmasterWorld, Tom1961!

i agree with ve3oat that you should wait for the warrant to protect yourself.
