I'm all for improvements in security, and image and numerics can help, i'm sure. I'd need to dig into this in more detail to fully understand how it can help. In the meantime, here's the story.

Researchers at Plymouth University have developed a numerical-based security system that could replace traditional passwords and multi-factor authentication.

GOTPass, developed by the Centre for Security Communication and Network Research (CSCAN). is a one-time numerical code that doesn't depend on hardware or software to work.

They complain a lot in the article about how multi-factor authentication is expensive. It used to be, but now it's as simple as adding an app to your smart phone or making your own USB dongle for the purpose. (Even a Yubikey would be cheaper) This scheme just seems too complex.

There are better password replacement technologies coming down the pipeline, like SQRL that seem easier and more secure than this.
