I have been an affiliate for some time promoting products like Wordpress themes, plugins, domain name and other website related products etc. I have been always wondering who are the buyers and what are they doing with their websites. For me I need a website so that I can become an affiliate and promote things. I don't think my customers are affiliate though. I want to understand this so that I can better cater to my potential customers.

What in your opinion why do people need a website? I have a few answers but can you share yours here too?

  1. They are affiliates, building website to promote products.
  2. They are local business owner, who wants to own a presence online.
  3. They are online store owner. They engage in e-commerce activities.
  4. They are individual who wants a portfolio website.
  5. Big corporate
  6. Community based organisation like church and neighbourhood, and forum
  7. ..... your thought please?

Thanks!

Actors and musicians - a website supports static data and downloadables such as publicity photos as well as on line sales. (specialist subset of 4?)

#7. Well, where else would your grandmother post pictures of her cat?

Anything that has a physical presence-- be it a university, a business, a charitable organization-- is expected to have a website as well. There were mail-order firms decades before there was an internet. Where on the list 1-7 would you put websites that don't correspond to something with a physical presence?

I have been an affiliate for some time

1. They are affiliates

Insert "You keep using that word" reference here. Then again, my dictionary of choice was printed in 1976.

:: glancing at adjacent tab and idly wondering whether anyone on earth sincerely believes that 96% of the web is only accessible to users of a particular commercial service ::

If you are asking why anyone would need a web site... they don't. The world still goes round.and round. If you are asking how you might convince people they need a web presence that's a marketing question. Can you sell that idea (web site) to people? Maybe, but not everyone will agree, and some truly do not benefit with a web site.
