Net Outage Affecting Many Users Worldwide

According to reports, many, many users indicating lots of sites appear to be down.

Looking at the charts, it seems that there is 100% packet loss with some services, although access via mobile services helps prove it's not the site that's down, but the wired services.

This appears quite widespread right now.

I'm sure there will be more news on this in due course.

But in the meantime, downdetector.com has proved a helpful indicator.

Thanks for bringing it up. I see some strange loss of traffic, although ALL of my rankings are unchanged. Perhaps that's the issue.

I can't get to WebmasterWorld via Comcast so I tried a proxy IP and it was OK.

Looks like I'll be using the proxy for a while.

Yeah, I can't get on webmaster world via AT&T U-verse. Has anyone seen details of exactly what has gone wrong?

I've looked for answer but only seen conjecture at this point. Sounds like improperly announced BGP routes or something like an overflow with too many announcements.

Some routing tables hit 512K routes today. Some old hardware and
software can't handle that and either crash or ignore newly learned
routes. So this may cause some disturbances in the force.

A Message on the NOAA weather sites says:

On Tuesday, August 12, 2014, at approximately 8:30 a.m., a planned system fail-over test for approximately 7 hours

so it may have something to do with the situation. They say to expect delayed and missing data. It should be done soon if that's the cause - and assuming the tests went as planned...

Sometime before 5:00 PM (Eastern) the notices disappeared when I went back to check the images.

It seems that ebay was also down, although that was unconnected to the reports of other sites. Many sellers and buyers are frustrated by ebay's outage as they missed out on bids.

Just about to open a support ticket with my hosting company and there was a big notice about the global routing table exceeding 512,000 entries and mucking everything up world wide. Requires a memory upgrade to increase BGP table size. Looks like it started on the 7th and continues into the 13th. I thought it was my site and it's the network!
