Does creating many mail accounts for a domain eats up unnecessary hard disk space specially in a shared hosting scenario. I am seeing lot of "502 bad gateway" errors nowadays while opening webmail Ids.

Depends on the contract with your provider.

The question is less whether any given activity consumes disk space, than whether the provider can or does take measures to ensure that no one server is overloaded.

Yes that sounds true, thats why bad gateway error is coming out. Just curious if the too much disk space can affect the performance. Sometimes back hosting team has replied on the issue that they have increased the no of name servers from 2 to 4. But i doubt the solution is related to the issue.
