Anyone know how to do this with software or a service? In essence, if my Internet connection goes down at the office I'm looking to get a text alert on my cell phone the minute it happens.
Any ideas would be appreciated greatly.

Yes, there are services out there (without naming any). A quick Google would help you.

Understood...that is where I'm having trouble though...finding them...how about "industry keywords" - not names of services...I am keep getting services and software that monitor uptime - don't care about that...want real time notification when my work connection goes down. I bet I will find eventually....just trying to save some time by searching the brains here.

They usually fall under the collective name of website monitoring

Now, wait. Are you asking about your own connection, or your site's connection? Or are they the same thing (for example if you're running your own server)?

You know, I'd just assumed it was a public web server, but now I'm glad you asked for clarification as it looks like I've misunderstood.

Thanks for the replies. Nope not my web site (there are a ton of these services) but my actual Internet connection used for browsing the Internet, etc.

For future readers of this thread. Found under "network monitoring" - "server monitoring" would work too "I believe" - just need to make it work with my dynamic ip address.

@ecommerceforprofit - There are services that are amazingly inexpensive that will allow you to tie a domain name to a dynamic IP. Less than about 10 bucks a year. I think that might be what you need.
