Tracking processes that contribute to server load

Hello,

I have a VPS account with a Apache/PHP/MySQL hosting provider (without root access though), and I am experiencing a situation where the provider suspends my account because of excessive load on the server from my site.

When I ask the provider what plugin, code, etc. on the site is causing the load, they cannot be specific. They've tried different things to improve performance and reduce the load, but the issue keeps on recurring.

Is there anything I can do on my side to track what processes are causing excessive server load? Are there any logs I can look at, any components I can install, any commands I can run (and how would I run them)?

If there's any additional information you need me to provide, let me know.

welcome to WebmasterWorld, kwerri!

you might want to look at this "Tuning Apache" [webmasterworld.com] thread from the Apache Web Server forum at WebmasterWorld for some ideas.
