I own a forum and i'm paying a lot for promotion, but people just visit one time

From ur experience which is (most) effictive to make users return regualrly:

- Mailling list to send a newsletter

- creating my own toolbar (using conduit)to send them a notification to desktop

- free Gmail group

- facebook group (old one or new one) or facebook page
- RSS

WebmasterWorld has NONE of the things you mentioned in the first post yet many people stick around here for years.

The second post seemingly nails it.

At the risk of sounding repetitive, none of the items on your list.

As rocknbil states, compelling content would be #1.

In your case with a forum, #2 would be quality engagement.

You are too much focused on means for asking them to return. You need to focus more on reasons why they should return.

Authority matters, it's human nature to "want the best" so you have to make your site "become the best" in whatever subject it's focus is.

You can split the internet into two types of sites. #1 and everyone else. Only #1 isn't fighting an uphill battle, every other site is, so keep chipping away.
