two similar websites at same server /ip address

Hello -
I would like to know if two similar websites are running from similar ip addresses, for example, 215.215.215.312 and 215.215.215.314, it can make a difference in the rankings.
Both of the websites are targeting same audience, they have similar content but the rankings are not pretty close at all.
What do you guys think?

For which site?

As long as you don't inter-link both sites then you should be just fine.

If the sites are similar in content, you might run into duplicate content issues and one site will be favored over the other one--typically due to the number of links and overall visibility. The site that gets crawled first (and has more links) will typically outrank the other.
