Is a negative domain name poor marketing?

Hi Everyone,
I am about to launch a new road racing training websites. My training newsletter site I was thinking of a name similar to...

7cyclingmistakes.com

Is this type of name too obvious or display a negative overtone?
I could use for example cyclingpower.com but this type of name is too broad.

I am just not sure, marketing wise, if using the work “mistake” signifies a negative. But a site titled for example…

7cyclingtips or 7cyclingstrategies

… is not what my training series is about at all. The vast majority of racing athletes make these 7 common mistakes. Remove these natural training mistakes and the athlete will get faster.

I do realize that a website is dependant just on the domain name.

What do you think?

Cheers - Rod

Tips and strategies can list what not to do. What do folks search for more? Maybe tips and strategies.

On the otherhand, mistakes as a keyword stands out from the pack. It is more clickable perhaps than the others. A must read call to action.

Sorry. I'm no help! :-)

cycling training = 27,100 Global searches and 2,400 local (Aussie) "in phrase" searches per month.

cycling mistakes = 0 and 0

Source is Google AdWords keyword tool.

Isolating "mistakes" on it's own doesn't return any terms related to cycling so that second word will drag down your overall weight on "cycling" because it will lend part of itself to queries unrelated to your site.

This makes a lot of sense, drag down overal weight. Though I will be using a WP blog to drive traffic to this website and will not be dependant on the newsletter site to draw traffic.

I am just not comfortable using the word "tips" in the domain name.

The newsletter doamin wbsite in fact doesn't even need to be in the search engines. Does this change the argument?

Have to ask... is it wise to reveal potential "site names" on a highly trafficked website where a competitor or scraper gets there before you do? I know the rules at WebmasterWorld have relaxed a bit...

Some things we keep close to the vest...

No it is not wise but these names I won't be using. And if the name was snapped up I would just add another training mistake and have 8CyclingTips.com

It might be cool to register both names and create two sites - one with positive tips and one listing mistakes. Make the visual theme of each site a mirror of the other and link them together.
