How to removed sitemaps from google index?

I am in dilemma, my sitemaps generated by wordpress XML sitemap generator is now in google index. Any idea how do I get it removed from it?

I tried blocking it in robots.txt but then the whole sitemap gets blocked from the search engines.

i would try a "X-Robots-Tag: noindex, follow" HTTP response header for the sitemaps.xml file(s)
