I've been using Symantec Ghost to back up my website to a separate hard drive at my house, just in case my computer's hard drive ever fails. I had it set to back up the directories and files involved with my site, as I often have things on my home computer that I'm working on, so they aren't on the server yet, and I don't want to lose them.

Symantec seems to have a lot of fingers in other programs, however, and when it somehow got corrupted and quit working, it was a nighmare to remove everything, so I'm not sure Ghost is the way to go again.

Anyone have anything to recommend? I just back up the directory my site is in, as well as a few other directories that have images in them I'm working on, so I have everything related to my site on a separate hard drive in case something happens to my computer. I'd like to find something that's easy to set up and program. My version of Ghost was older, so that may have been the problem, but I do want to see what other options may be out there before I buy Ghost again.

Thanks in advance.

I had similar problems to you. Actually getting rid of Ghost and Norton was more hassle and more difficult than getting rid of a virus. I would not touch Norton/Symantec products with a bargepole.

I use AJC Sync (Google it) and also the backup software that came with my Seagate FreeAgent external hard drive, which can be set to do backups automatically at a convenient time for you.

I use and really like Acronis True Image. This allows you to create/restore backup images. You can also mount backup images to browse through any files in the backup.

In addition you can create a boot disk and I regularly backup computers onto a usb drive using this disk before doing any major installs etc. With the boot disk no software needs to be installed on the pc and you can backup/restore very easily.

Thanks, I'll look into both of your suggestions.

Haven't had time to post in a while...

I can recommend SyncBack! www.2brightsparks.com/syncback
The free version will do more than what you need.

I use this daily to backup my work. Sending it to external HDDs and networked PCs.

I have nothing to do with SyncBack other than being a very happy user :)

I used to use ghost via dos boot disk but that was not practical in the end. Tried the live windows versions but too buggy / slow.

Macrium Reflect gets a + from me. Performs quick, unobtrusive, live full partition backups, and full partition or single file / directory restores easily. Free edition works perfectly well.

I used SyncBack, but now use Windows 7 built in backup. Have you looked at offsite storage solutions too?
