My current web host, on which I used a shared server was great until I faced an intense DoS attack that lasted several days.

One of the company techs persuaded me that the host could defend against the attacks & any future ones if I moved to a VPS server, which I did. What he didn't tell me was that the memory limits of the virtual server were drastically reduced fr. the shared server.

So now, I hit memory limits regularly which shuts down my site requiring restarting the server periodically.

Now, I pay 5 times what I was paying on the shared server, but I'm miserable & don't want to pay even more to up my memory. Plus, the switchover fr. shared to VPS server was arduous & filled with glitches.

So my question is, can anyone who's faced DoS attacks or security related issues & has a host they like recommend them to me privately.

Should I expect a host to be able to defend against a DoS attack on a shared server?

Security and defending a DoS attack are things a good host should be able to do. No host can keep every DoS from happening, but when it does, they should be able to work with you and stop it in a reasonable amount of time.

My suggestion: Don't worry specifically about the DoS thing, just look for a quality host that is great with security. If all you need is shared hosting, there are plenty out there, and it's in their best interest to prevent attacks since it will effect many clients.
