Promoting your website using traditional advertising

Does it work?

Do some research on promoting your website and chances you'll come up with terms like SEO, directory submission, article submission, link exchange/buying, etc.

I don't know about you, but these methods, while cost-effective, seem pretty amateurish to me (don't take offense - I've used these methods myself).

Is it not feasible at all for websites to advertise themselves using traditional media like print, radio, tv, billboards, etc?

Particular for websites using a publishing model where revenue is generated purely through adsense/banner ads with a CPM of a few dollars (if you're lucky) and advertising through traditional media running at rates of several tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars, it seems that webmasters are locked out cost-wise from these forms of advertising.

Has anyone ever tried and, if so, what are your experiences?

Not an answer but a fact!

Many here are highly trained true professionals running companies or working a one man show in the fields above described.

Nowadays web business is very much structured in many complementary sections (such as those methods) most well known and highly visible site do rely on those "amateurish methods"

You don't promote web sites, you promote the businesses that those sites support. The most appropriate channels will depend on the business sector.

@piatkow,
Not always, I run a site that is not dedicated to sale of "products", has no advertising and is membership oriented.

You would still promote the service that the site provides, not the site as an artifact in its own right.
