What's new:
• a fresh, updated design, with more space for the main stories of the day
• better use of video and images
• clearer and more prominent labelling and signposting of key stories, whether you are on the front page or a story page
• a better indication of which are the most recent headlines
• easier ways to share stories with others, for those who wish to, on social media networks

Very nice. :)

Was just looking at it. Takes a while to get used to and there is a lot of white space.

What I do find interesting is how a web redesign affects users, as I really do not like it from my initial reaction. I know it will grow on me, I just like the old one.

I wonder whether just cleaning up the old design rather than making such a massive change is the best option.

Like I said, it's the Beeb I will grow to like it. Just might take a few days.

They're also redirecting.

Old URL was news.bbc.co.uk, new one is www.bbc.co.uk/news/

Weren't they aware of Matt Cutt's mentioning something about PR dilution through redirects!? ;)

PR? Considering the proportion of their traffic that will be type do you think they are bothered?

Don't like all the massive text headlines at all, way too over powering, the watch/listen box design is awful, and there does seem a lot of redundant space amongst the elements so it doesn't really hang together that well.

Even the article pages are full of distractions, they seem to want to get people to click around like maniacs rather that providing anything that is actually readable imo.

If you reduce the browser text size by one size the layout actually looks ok, it's as if the design was done on a high resolution screen, definitely looks wrong on 1024x768 to me.
