The Impact of having multiple domains targetting same keywords

Multiple sites targetting the same keywords

I work as an E-Marketing Executive for a small company based in the UK. We have a range of keywords that we are targetting and it is my role to achieve these positions. There are a number of keywords that one of our websites has been number one for signifcant amounts of time, but when I optimise our second website for the same tersm, as soon as the second site reaches the top ten, the first site loses positioning.

This situation has arisen for a number of keywords, but before now I didn't understand why it was happening. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

I haven't got any duplicate copy but the two main websites are heavily optimised for the same keyword. I have reached number five for this keyword but recently dropped to 8 as soon as the other site moved into the top 10, and am now back to 5 now that the first site has dropped out of the first two pages, it baffles me!

If anyone can help me with this please do.

Thanks

Paul

Perhaps you are not the only one doing optimisation, perhaps other sites in the top 10 are also jostling for position, perhaps it has more to do with that than it has to do with your two sites.

Thanks for the reply. The only thing is the positions only move when we improve the positioning of the second site, and in most cases they go back as soon as we change it. I'm asking the question to identify the best possible move for us, whether it is to optimise sites to different keywords.

welcome to WebmasterWorld [webmasterworld.com], SEOpaul!

are those domains hosted on the same server or IP address?
the common domain ownership may even be enough to cause that.

Hi Phranque

Thanks for the reply. We have tried to take them off of the same server, as they were initially, but the problem is still there, it might be that we haven't done it probably, this is certainly one of the avenues that I am going to look into.

Thanks again

Paul
