Toby Odone, a BP spokesman, said the company's goal in buying the search results was to make information on the leak more accessible.

This move is all about damage control--which isn't really possible now.

One positive thing... Whether they really deserve it or not, this mega PR disaster will definitely put the fear of god in the other companies, and they will step up their measures to try and prevent this kind of thing happening again. Something they would have never done otherwise.

BP is like the smart mouth kid that the coach punished the whole rest of the team for, by making them all run another 5 laps... It's not fair, but it will have the right effect.
