Just wondering if anyone has ever done a test to find out if an internal link in the content would have more weight than one in a navigation section?

From one page I guess you mean.

The advantage of navigation links is that they are usually present in every page, so you have a lot of them.

To answer your point, I don't know.

I was under the impression that if you have let say a paragraph that talks about "animal" and you link to a page that is about animal it would have more weight but it is maybe one of these myths!

Linking in the content gives you the opportunity to vary the text in the link.
