For weeks I have been reading about SEO till my brain is bleeding..The hardest thing is trying to decifer what is accurate info and what is not..I know quality backlinks are very important..
I broke down and hired a company for SEO work..They say they normally charge 800 a yr for their services..I have pd the sale price 100.$..(yes I know if quacks like a duck it usally is)
So far I am not impressed with what they have sent me on my Site Analysis.

The main reason I used them for all the backlinks they claim they are going to get for me..

Did I waste my money?
Thanks, Sam

welcome to WebmasterWorld [webmasterworld.com], samntex!

what did you expect to get for $100?
i can't imagine getting a decent rudimentary site audit done for $800, let alone a year of "SEO services" for $100.

Yes you did. When you hire a company they need to tell you exactly what they are going to do. How do they do link building? If all they do is directory submissions, article distribution run away. For what you paid I doubt they even did that. They need to be doing real link building. They need to recommend good content for your website to help you get links. They need to be sending out personal emails for link requests and not be sending out bulk spam. I have seen $1000 a month SEO companies do a bad job. If they claim to have any secrets they suck. There is no secret to SEO it is just hard work.

$100 is really comical for an SEO company, most likely a scam.

Smells like 40 inbound links from a bunch of PR0 or MFA sites on the same server.

Well, to be fair . . . while you get what you paid for, a $100 investment can improve a site's indexing.

Before you slam dunk me into the flame barrel, consider this: Many web sites have this.

<head>
<title>Untitled</title>
<meta name="keywords" content="greatest,site,on.the.internet">
</head>
<font size="3"><b>This is my excuse for a level 1 head</b></font>

A client approaches me with a five page web site, asks to "SEO" it for $100 - which has happened - I give them three things.

1. No promises, for $100 I may not be able to get you to page 1 but we can do some things that will help.

2. Modification of those five pages to improve the head info and at the very least work in a level 1 head, sometime making minor mods to the content of the pages (but not a lot, for $100!)

3. A boatload of advice on what they can do next and how much they can expect to pay for the results they expect.

I think, really, the proof in the pudding is what they tell you when you state your budget. If they say yes, we can give you millions of "hits" - scam. If they tell you what you most likely don't want to hear, you're probably dealing with someone who will treat you fairly. To wit . . .

I know quality backlinks are very important

Per #3, one of the inputs would be that this is largely incorrect and you can get fairly decent page ranking without jumping on the link-me bandwagon.

I have been reading about SEO till my brain is bleeding

SEO is a specialist subject, and not one that everyone needs to understand and implement. If it isn't for you, then hiring someone seems very reasonable.

In terms of choosing a supplier, I would recommend you approach this in an entirely different way:

- work out the budget you have to spend on SEO based on the profit your site is generating
- decide on what performance criteria you want to judge an SEO supplier with
- approach reputable SEO companies in your price range, explain your calculations, and ask whether they think they can deliver the service - at the price you are prepared to offer, for the service you expect to receive

You'll find SEO suppliers are a mixed bunch, and the process of selecting is not just a due diligence exercise - it will also give you an insight into the companies you'll be able to get along with as a trusted supplier working with you to make your site a success.
