This sounds a whole lot like a homework question, and that's probably why people haven't been jumping in to answer.
Perhaps you could explain what you need to know all this for.

We have a search form [webmasterworld.com] here. Over the last 9 years tigger and I have seen these topics discussed a few times. It was suggested that you dig for the answer a bit yourself. There's a lot of knowledge accumulated here and it's all accessible via search. You may have heard the old proverb "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."

They are typically synonymous of one another relabeled over the years to fit current trends.

ok i get it now..but a small diubt ...say i have a website abc.co.uk and another one def.com for type in traffic. These are mirror sites in terms of exaxtly identical content..now if I put a 301 redirect from def.com to abc.co.uk, then def.com won't get indexed and abc.co.uk would get indexed. But does that mean def.com won't rank on SEs as well....which must be the case....

Right, def.com will disappear from search, and you will no longer have to worry about def.com competing with abc.co.uk in the SERPs -- You will no longer be competing with yourself, and dividing all of your potential "ranking power" between multiple sites.

ideally you would have abc.co.uk hosted in the uk with uk-relevant content, linked to by uk-relevant pages, etc. similarly with def.com and us-centric hosting/content/links. avoid duplication of english language content between the domains.
