Media tycoon Rupert Murdoch expects News Corporation-owned newspaper Web sites to start charging users for access within a year in a move he says could radically shake-up the culture of freely available content.

it might do if everyone else follows suit. all the big papers are in the same boat with falling ad revenues.
even if they don't get much money from the new web charges, it might up the sales of their printed papers a little bit.
he needs everyone to follow suit though.

No, it's not gonna fly. "radically shake-up the culture of freely available content"?, LOL!

I for one am going to keep my content freely available and ad-supported.

Our local newspaper already does this.

They want $9.95 per month and a copy of the paper is 50 cents. Most often, it's so lame you only need the Friday edition as most articles are repeated. Do the math.

Good, I hope he and many other sites do this. Just makes my free content that more valuable.

It will only work if everyone starts to charge for content and I can't really see that happening. Publishers will just have to try and find additional revenue streams if they cannot be supported solely by ads.

No, it's not gonna fly
esp with the cultural shift in saving money during the recession!
