Paypal not accepting debit and credit card payments now?

Hi,

I've got a client who uses Shopify with PayPal Website Payments Standard enabled and previously you could pay using just your debit or credit card, but now it seems not...

Are PayPal forcing people to sign up for an account now to make purchases?

I have been caught by that when making purchases in the past and have regarded PP as the spawn of Satan ever since.

The impression that I had from posts on the ecommerce forum was that it is something that varies according to the visitor's location. I have never used PP as a processor so I don't know what the account options are for merchants.

As most PP discussion is under ecommerce perhaps a kindly mod could move the thread?

I use paypal to allow my consulting clients to pay online. I simply have a 'donation' button set so that they can put in any amount.

I just checked it and it looks like you acan still pay without using your paypal account. Down at the bottom left it says

Don't have a PayPal account?
Use your credit card or bank account (where available). Continue

They do make it very difficult for people to see that you can pay without using your account.

One problem with using your account is that they may take it out of your bank account. I had that happen and a couple of checks went BOING... I was saying some not nice things about paypal. I had been testing a clients paypal and accidentlly logged onto paypal and forgot to specify using the CC

I have a lot of clients in South America - Brazil, Argentina, etc, - & have a real problem getting payments.

Bank transfers to my US account are very costly so PayPal with a credit card is the preferred option.

Unfortunately "Instant Payments" are not available. The clients have to register their cards & many times the cards are rejected for some reason.

These are all valid people, not stolen cards, and it is very frustrating for both sides as we will not take reservations without payment.

Does anyone have any other options?
