Unless you own the IP block you'll need to contact your provider to set a PTR.

hmm

why do you say this?

so far i have come up with this....

does this make sense?

000.000.00.185.static.myserviceprovider.net. 86400 IN PTR mail.mywebsite.net

i am trying to keep my php/sendmail mail() emails from never getting to yahoo and from landing in hotmail junk folders....

why do you say this?

Because you won't be authoritative for the IP address and nobody will come to you to look it up.

does this make sense?

No, that's not the way it works.

my data center has 'assigned' this ip block to me...

not the same as own?

please, tell me what i should be asking this data center to do?

i already asked them about reverse DNS records and Resolver records and they say they have no more settings to set and gave me the first part of the post above to work with...

whan i make changes to my zone file should i be doing anything other thant restarting bind? thank you

Nope. Do a whois on it and see.

If they won't let you have your IP reverse to what you want, you should dump them and go somewhere else.

That should work. Just remember that the PTR does not belong in your domain's zone file.

what am i doing wrong?

emails to yahoo, comcast verizon bounce hotmail goes into junk folder

i had to put noreply@mywebsite.net in php.ini to get them to work (problem occurs www-data user from php/sendmail) - i am using postfix dovecot - i added 'generic' table mapping - this was showing in emailheaders but they still had problems -- so i figured it wa this blasted PTR record or the SPF record i added thursday -- still no differenc to hotmail -- boing.... intojunk folders

thoughts?
