Ping test for website

I am trying to choose a good hosting i went a website to check their ping... i am not really sure what the ping is other that the speed of the servers response ( am i right ? ) and i have some website that give me 222 ms and others give me 60 ms... i guess i should go with the on that gives me 60 ms is that the way it works ?

Ping response time is everything in the pipeline. It can change from minute to minute depending on how the packets are routed.

If you are pinging their main website for info, their hosting may be on other servers anywhere.

So what is the way to test the quality of a hosting before buying ?

Ping response time is everything in the pipeline. It can change from minute to minute depending on how the packets are routed.

Routers are often configured to give very low priority to ICMP echo packets. So ping times aren't always all that meaningful as a measure of quality. Better to do real tests (from more than one location) by actually making requests.
