I've now accumulated hundreds if not thousands of zipped files for various bits of software. Most are useful as archives and I still use them on occasion. I'd like to manage all of them in some kind of system with an easy to use interface, but don't want to go down the whole svn route. I also need to keep info about them, the author, the version etc.

I've searched high and low and come up with nothing suitable.

Have you found anything which can manage your files on your desktop/file server?

I manage 750,000+ files (all kinds) via ACCESS. Wrote the db back in 1998 and have had no reason to change. Tells which drive/system the file is located, size, date, and has a note field where I can (if needed) add a description. Usually the filename is sufficient for that purpose.
