SSL certs across different IPs

I firstly want to apologize for my first post here to be that asking a question, but here we go and thank you in advance.

Could someone please offer a little advise on SSL certificates for a nonstandard setup. Basically the software I'm currently developing was originally going to be set up on a single server with the SSL certificate placed appropriately, easy.

However, the server is now to be split up for separate parts of the country (UK) using the primary domains subdomains as a reference. So we'll have london.domain.com, south.domain.com, northwest.domain.com ect. These subdomains will all point to the appropriate area clusters, all of which have different IPs. What problems (if any) would this cause for the SSL certificate?

Plus we'll be domain aliasing to each of these servers, so multiple domains will hit an area server. Would this also have an adverse effect?

Kind regards.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld, Fenric :)

You can obtain a wildcard SSL certificate which is valid for all the subdomains (many vendors offer these). It may be a bit of a pain maintenance-wise depending on your setup, since each server will need to be using this certificate.

The reason you'll often hear talk about SSL and IP addresses is that while SSL secures a domain or subdomain, it requires a unique IP address for the server to be able to encrypt the traffic correctly. But you buy a cert for a name, not an IP.
