Incoming Blog Links

How valuable are these links?

Any of us that practice SEO understand the value of incoming links to our sites and we also know that not all links are created equal, some are much better than others. My question is around links you get from commenting in blogs.

I have about 4-5 different blogs I check almost everyday and I am pretty diligent about always posting good, substantive comments. All the blogs have a place to enter your web site address, which they then use to link to your site. With all the comments I post in these blogs I would think my incoming links would be helping me out a little more than it appears is actually happening.

My question is how valuable do others think these "comment" links are from blogs? For the sake of conversation assume all the blogs are decent in terms of traffic, not stellar, decent. Are these links just not that valuable? Would my link building efforts be better spent elsewhere?

Have you checked to see that these links aren't marred by a "nofollow"? Many blogs now default to having nofollow on any user submitted links so it could be that none of these links have value.

If this is the case, then the only value you could get from commenting in blogs would come from posting such interesting comments that you end up starting a dialogue with the owner of the blog and thus getting them to link to you themselves from somewhere else.

I wouldn't do it for SEO but would do it if it was going to bring organic traffic from the blog's visitors.
