How to Handle Niche Site with Information (selling only seasonal)

Say I have a website ranked very highly for the term "pink octagon shaped widgets". Now these widgets sell like crazy for 2 months out of the year and then my inventory and sales dry up completely until next season.

But this site also has a lot of useful information about pink octagon shaped widgets, with new content frequently updated. This info doesn't market my product at all, it's just about the niche in general.

The problem with this site is it's newish and has zero back-links. Do you think it's wise to change the graphics (that advertise the product) and make it more of JUST an informational site until next season? Like get rid of the buy now links to a product page that just says out of stock?

Having a buy now link when your product is "out of season" is just going to p*ss people off and they won't come back at the right time.

I would say get in more information and make it clear that the product is available for purchase on a seasonal basis. Maybe run a couple of Adsense ad units out side of your own sales season.
